Hi all,
I have to vent...
Why is it, that everyone thinks that an elf lives in a tree? Why is that everyone thinks that we are "one" with nature?
Why is being an elf have to be spiritual??
I was reading over a few spots for elf-kin and this is the reason why I don't join any of them... we are not all fluff and light!!!
I keep reading how us fey types, including all elves and sprites are vegetarians, how not only do we have a connection with, but we "are" nature.
I read about our "spiritual pathways", how we make friends with the elements.
Well my friends, as an elf, I can say this is not so and I wish that some of these "elves" would make mention that not ALL elves are the same!
I don't say all humans are dirty little monkeys.
I don't say all Dogs eat Alpo.
So why would you categorize all elves as peaceful, nature spirits??
I am from the branch of elven lore where the elves were fierce warriors.
I come from the branch the lived in a slightly colder climate, with mountains and thick pine forests.
I come from a proud heritage of fighters and Kings among men.
I did not come from another planet, I did not come from another plane.
I am an elf by birth, not by spiritual connection.
If only I could prove my lineage, however, my family did not keep that great of records, and when I tried to do a genealogy chart, I got about as far as my great grandfather on my dad's side, and just my grandparents on my mother's side.
UGH!!! Sorry, but just like anything else, I am a product of my environment.
I live in Chicago, I was raised in Chicago... nature to me is the local forest preserve. Making friends with the elements is asking Brother Wind to please not blow out the windows of the 3rd floor apartment.
I drink bottled water!!!
Now I shouldn't be to harsh... some of what is written is true and I can apply it even to my city girl fighter life.
I do get a call from nature every now and then. Sometimes I do need to be left alone to recharge and ground myself. I have seen other fey types. I have seen nature spirits. I have spoken to them.
I can be spiritual at times, although it's more of my own personal Jesus than any real spirituality.
I guess what I get tired of is the stereo-type that elves must live in trees and name their children Arwyn.
No we live in cities, we live near the lakes, we drive cars and fly planes. It's not always peace and light... sometimes we are dark and emotional. Sometimes we wage war over the smallest most insignificant things.
If nothing else, we are all still part human, and I don't care how spiritual you want to become, how much you want to say that you are not... we all still are part, and if you are truly not even a % of human, you were still raised in a human, mortal world. Again, we are products of our environment.
So please, don't laugh and ask where my tree house is?
Don't ask me if my child's name is Elrond?
Don't ask me to "read" your aura or look at spirits with my mind's eye.
Don't ask me to climb a tree or walk quietly thought a woods.
Don't expect me to notice every energy signature or fairy that's around.
I am an elf, living in the 21st century, in the middle of Chicago... how else do you think I would be?
Thank you <steps off of soap box>
