I moderate a handful of egroups on YahooGroups.com and with the constant threat of spammers all of these groups including the ones I own have gone the route of making it mandatory that new members have a completed yahoo profile that lists their age, gender and location. And we have stated this requirement in the description of the egroup. Have actually made it the very first thing that prospective members see when they read the description of the group.
But on a weekly basis I deny more people than I approve because they obviously don't see/read this before they click the Join button. We have also set it so that a message is sent to those rejected explaining what they need to do to become approved and either they aren't reading that message or they just don't care.
It makes me so mad. I actually wonder if people can't read or if they actualy don't care. It gets annoying after awhile. At least it does for me cause I am taking time out of my life to make sure these groups are taken care of. And we want new members but I would prefer that they were of the quality who cared about the groups they joined enough to at least read the opening page. As it is I doubt they know what group their joining.

One thing to consider which happened to me once. Yahoo for some unknown reason had deleted my profile which got me a denial notice from this sculpture group I wanted to join. So in at least a few cases they probably thought they did have a profile.

Yeah on the groups that I moderate, I've gotten people who hadn't realized they had no profile showing. So that is possible. What I usually do is email the person wanting to join personally and ask them to update their profile as per the egroup's home page rules state. Then I deny the process until they reapply, which they generally email back apologizing and fixing the problem and then resubmitting their request.
