Why do classic portrayals of ghosts have sheets covering them?

No one really knows, maybe it is just one of those things that has been mad slightly less scary for public audiences or maybe it is supposed to represent the mist which surrounds some spirits. Or maybe it is just entirely random.

I think it was the cheepest way for movie directors to portray a ghost
BUT...another take on it may be the take that at one time most of our dead used to be wraped in various articels of cloth. Some culters used the same veil for their wedding as they did their shroud.
