I have a question... Has anybody here ever met a gargoyle? How do you recognize one when you see one. And, what are the traits of one? How do you know if you are a gargoyle?

You mean the "stone becomes flesh"
Mmm, well they say trollkin exists...maybe gargoyle to. But remember that all references to gargoyles seem to have to deal with magical "guardians" etc.... it aint standard stuff!

The earliest sculptures of gargoyles didn't come about till the Licchavi art era 200-800A Most are used to adorn cathedrals. Troll legends date back to the Lapps and pre Indo-European Cultures. Also, the term gargoyle describes a mounting with a drain more than it names a creature. And the original gargoyle was not a creature that turns to stone, but a dragon who was defeated and when burned the head became so tempered it would not burn any longer. (the story below) We discussed this on the main forum back in January and it hung over till March I believe. Here is some interesting info on gargoyles:
Gargoyles and grotesques are similar in many ways. For one, they both came about in the Middle Ages, (700-1450AD). Most are difficult to date due to the wars in Europe. However, if actual dates are not available, most of these stones works are placed sans date. In Medieval Culture, Gargoyles, Chimeres and Groteques were used to decorate the house of God. It is believed in many cultures, that in order to keep away “evil spirits” one must utilize something frightening. This is similar to wearing Halloween costumes in order to keep out ghosts and ghouls that roam freely on All Hallow’s Eve. Gargoyals were also an educational device. For those that were illerate, as many were during these times, church doctrin could be taught through such grotesques. Some gargoyals are shown eating naked humans representing the demons of Hell devouring the human souls. Some are also to remind us of the Passion of Christ. Using his brutalized body and crucifiction; and beyond, the Resurrection. It is also thought that some are portraits of the "medieval man and his struggles with reality." (Gurevich 1988). But where did gargoyles get their name?? The word Gargoyal shares a common root with the word "gargle”; which comes from “Gargouille”, a French word meaning throat and the gurgling noise when water is passed through. The name is from a legend of a dragon named La Gargouilla, described as having a long reptilian neck and a slender snout that lived in a cave near the River Seine. The Dragon caused much fear and destruction with it’s firey breath. Every year the residents of Rouen would sacrifice a human life, usually a criminal, although it was believed the dragon preferred maidens. Around 600, a village was saved by St. Romanus, who promised to deal with the dragon only if the people promised to be baptized and build a church. Romanus subdued the dragon by making a sign of the cross in front of it. The dragon was then captured and burned at the stake. It is said that the head and neck of this dragon was so well tempered that they would no longer burned. The remains were the mounted on the town’s walls and became the model for gargoyals to come. In a side note… mountings without a spout or drain are called grotesques.

I am gargoylekin, I think the traits of one really differ, there are more humanoid looking gargoyles and there are more animal looking ones. Most of them seemed to be winged though there are some which are not. I do not know about turning to stone, I have no memories of it and no knowledge of whether this is one simply a myth or truth. I have heard report a of someone seeing a gargoyle flying near a cemetery in the daylight, I heard this from the person themselves but do not yet know much of that person's character, they were oterkin but it is possible that they saw something else or lied to me. There are many things which were not documented and there were many things that have been renamed over the years. For all I know the group which I refer to as gargoyles are really multiple species, they might be related to dragons or they might not. It is very hard to gather information on something from your past life, especially given that none of my visions of being a gargoyle involved any speaking. .The lack of speaking could be that gargoyles do not infact speak or an extension of my own lack of clairaudiance.
