Elves: are we related to fae or completely separate? Or are some related and some not? Why is this?

Yes. In every culture the Fae exist and are named by that culture, as are the Gods and Celestial Beings. Our separation is no different than that of the Norse and the Celts or Chinese. They are human, we are Fae, and as such have differences too.

Elves are a type of fae. As are pixies, brownies, nixies, red caps, etc. The word "Elves" is usually applied to the human like fae of the Celtic and Germanic tribes. There are humnanoid fae of other cultures but they are called by other words. For example the Eastern American Indians have a legend of "little people" who are usually kind to children and people who get lost but only if you respect the forest. If you disrespect the forest and get lost ... the "little people" would either harrass you or you'd never find your way home again. Even these fall under the general heading of "fae".
