I don't use one either. I use my left pointer finger. Many people think that you need"tools" for rituals. True magic comes from with in! What you cast out comes back 3 folds. Tools can enhance whatever you are doing.

I just use my finger as a wand as well, it's skinny enough *hehe*

Do you think that the wand should chose you, rather than you chosing it?

I did when I practiced many years ago. I made my own and I loved it. It was a simple stick I founf atthe forest preserve. measured from the crook of my elbow to the tip of my middle finger. I actually stripped the bark, sanded it down and placed a quartz in the tip wrapped tightly in twine. I did a blessing over it, and it served me well for about a year till my mom found it <eep death to my stick ) It was one of those things that when she snapped it, she snapped something in me and I never made another one. I loved my wand!!!!! I understand that true magick comes from within, but I am one of those people that needs tools to focus my energies properly. Otherwise, they fly off in a whirl wind and nothing ever gets done. I think the choosing works both ways. For me, here I am wondering along and I come across a plain old stick. But this stick it just the right size that I was looking for. With a little love, it became a fine wand. Perhaps Fate placed it there for me to find, so in this case, we chose each other.

Truly a wand is somthing you choose rather than somthing that cooses you, mainly for the reason that the best and most effective of wands are hand made from a stick or a branch, and as mentioned by Elix one that measures about from the crook of your elbow to the tip of your middle finger. Wands are best made from willow, because of its flexible and beinding nature it is good for working most kinds of magick though most tree branches will work. If there is a tree very close and special to you it is best to make your wand from one of it's branches. And last of all it is most important to either take the branch for your wand from a stick that has naturaly fallen, or from a dormant tree since even though tree dont have minds and are not sentient they still have and produce energy and are alive and a wand taken from a living tree will often hold some of the pain you created in cutting off it's limb witch cold be a hinderence to working many magicks.

I have a few wands that I use sometimes. They are made of different woods and have different "feels", or resonances, to them. It is possible to choose a wand, or to work with a tree to ask it to grow one for you. I think the ones you come across by chance are the "best" though.

I agree that if you choose to use a wand, that the ones you find, they make the best tools. However, I personally have not found a need to use a wand. Most, if not all, of the work I ever perform used what was available to me at the time and a working knife. Otherwise I just use my hands. not to say that one day if I dont stumble across something that just screams "make me your wand" i wont, but till that happens... Nope dont use em.
And to elix up there. Bummer about your mom breaking yours, that had to hurt.

I've seen you work, and you're right you don't particularly need a wand Gabe. That knife of your works just fine *shivers* And sometimes a look or a work will carry more power and focus in it then a wand.
Though I agree with Gabe, someday I might get the call, but for now it's simple tools for me.

I have used wands when the working was too complicated to do it all in my head. I was taught that as a wand is an element of "air" the best wands were naturally shed wood that had NOT YET TOUCHED THE GROUND. If I was looking for a new wand I'd wander around the woods and find one that was caught in its mother tree, on vines or bushes or some other reason it was not touching the ground. I would NEVER take a stick from a living tree, even a dormant one. Always use fallen wood. Two of the most powerful wands I've ever used, one was a piece of driftwood that "called" to me and the other was a long pole that suddenly "appeared" where no pole should have been. It is a natural piece of some very white hard wood that was already stripped of its bark when it found me. That lance has many uses but most of all it was my signet of office as an elder in the groups I led. I miss having it for it is either in the home of my most recent past residence, forgotten in a corner somewhere, or it is in my storage room in Virginia and I'm stuck down here in SC.

There are so many wands being created and on sale these days I'm not sure those who purchase them actually use them. For myself I don't use a wand............I use my hand/arm as the extension of myself. But if I were to want to use one I would create my own from whatever wood called to me.
What do you guys think of the wands be offered for sale on and offline these days? If you bought one, would you use it or simply display it?

I think the craftsmanship of a lot of the wands I see for sale online and off is awesome. The one's I own I just display them. The wand I use most often is a piece of willow that called to me several years ago.

How do you become a witch? And how do you get a wand to work?

I made a wand, but it doesn't have a crystal. Is that a problem? And how do you use magic? Is it like a spell?
