Maybe this is an odd question coming with a strange explanation, but stick with me, if you can.
I've come to admit to myself over the years that I do practice some type of magic (or attempt to, lol). I restrict myself and my intentions when I practice it, but I do practice it some. Since learning that I do practice magic, I've tried to determine what "style", for lack of a better word, that I practice.
In my quest to determine my "style", I've done much looking back in my life, and examining those actions I've taken which I know understand to be at least some (however feeble) attempt to do magic. That examination has led me to believe that I practice some type of chaos magic. I draw that conclusion from the fact that the magic I practice is done and drawn from instincts with in myself, rather than some predefined form or spell books. When I set out to practice magic, I might use some references from spells, but what I actually do is based on what I feel is right in order to accomplish the ends.
That all said, I've recently been thinking about something that I had done when I was very young. It's a silly story, actually. When I was very young, I had gotten in trouble for one reason or another, and couldn't do what I wanted (like watch TV or something). In any case, I sat down at the piano in my house, and started to play a tune.
The tune started out as "chopsticks", but I sort of made up (or remembered from hearing it elsewhere) a different ending to it. When I was playing that song's ending, I remember sort of making it into a spell of sorts, with the end result being putting my mother to sleep so I could go and watch TV. Well, it worked. She went to sleep (going into the other room to take a nap) and I got to watch TV.
Recalling that event, I also recall other times I used the same song with the same purpose, getting the same results. That has led me to this question: Can music be used for spell work?
It seems to fit with other things I've read about chaos magic - where the practitioner does what he/she feels is right, rather than following form. But, not being very well educated in magic, I wanted to ask those of you who know more about it than myself.
Can music be used as a medium in a spell the same way other items (like burning herbs and crystals or reciting phrases) can be used? Has anyone else ever used music like that? Is it common or uncommon?
I'd be interested in anyone's comments on this. Thanks!
