I'm a pretty big fan of anime, as is most of my family. I don't follow any series, but my husband follows Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and Desert Punk and my sister casually follow Naruto.
As far as anime movies go (not series), I have several favorites. I like Perfect Blue (a great mind f*ck of a movie), Akira, Ghost in the Shell (both of them), Tokyo Godfathers (ABSOLUTELY GREAT!), and ANYTHING by Hayao Miyazaki!!!
Miyazaki is one of my favorite anime producers/directors. He did Princess Mononoke, but he has several other anime, most of them much better than PM. My favorites are Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away, and Naussica of the Valley of the Wind. The wonderful thing about Miyazaki's work (with few exceptions) is that it is great for children. His movies are for kids, but can be enjoyed by adults as well. But, unlike much of the current animated movies by such greats as Pixar and Disney, Miyazaki's work has such wonder themes, such as friendship, selflessness, and self confidence. His movies are truely fun for the whole family - made so by great stories, not by putting in "adult" jokes that will entertain the parents (like Shrek did).
One other thing I enjoy about anime is the fact that not all of them are for kids. Many great directors/producers have used the anime movie style to make excelent movies which would not be as easy to portray with real actors. Furthermore, it provides such a great visual experience, because most anime movies are full of top notch art. It brings a child of the 80's/90's back to the type of movies they liked as kids (those being mostly animated) but treats it just like an adult movie.
And not all anime is Pokemon. Directors/Producers like Satoshi Kon have done execelent movies on real life, like Tokyo Godfathers. Then you have the anime that is clearly fictional, like Ghost in the Shell and Final Fantasy. But, even with the highly unreal nature of the film, doing the subject through anime seems to make it funner and more enjoyable to watch than it would as a traditional movie.
So yes, I love anime! Let me know if you would like more ideas of other types of anime to watch, I'd be glad to share suggestions!

Miyazaki is a god. Totoro is a wonderful movie of his, and I liked Kiki's Delivery Service when I was younger. I got gold from a river spirit when I went to Otakon a few years back.
I like Nana right now, and have been more into manga than anime at the moment, with a subscription to Shojo Beat. *squee's for Backstage Prince and Absolute Boyfriend*

^_^ Oh, so very much the anime!
*squee!* Nana! Such a great manga! I haven't taken the time to watch the anime of it yet, but it's such a great series. ^_^ I like what I've seen of Absolute Boyfriend; Yuu Watase (surname last, here) is one of my favorite manga-ka, Fushigi Yuugi was the first manga I ever read, actually.

Indeed, I like what I've seen of Absolute Boyfriend as well...but I was only looking for eye candy. ^_^
I think that Hellsing would develop a great appreciation here, but maybe it's just me. ^_^
