Fear

People fear what they don't understand and view as "different" than what they consider the norm. Much like in history, Civil Rights....people thought that African Americans were different and to be feared. They looked different so they were treated different. Only thru time and strong willed individuals that this fear was stamped out. I think this will be the case with the fear of Goth, given time and patience and perseverance will it fade into history.
Most recently (in Sept.), I had dressed up to the "nines" with some friends for Philadelphia's Dracula's Ball. We had been walking down a local "haunt" and many people either turned to stare at us, cross the street or made comments like "It's not Halloween yet" or "Are you involved in a play?" and even "Are you Actors?" It was unreal LOL

Luckily here in the Dallas area, people usually ask whats the occasion for dressing up but nothing more than that. After I tell them I'm on the way to a club, thats usually all from them. Although my roommate and I have scared little kids while walking down an aisle at a store once.

I think a lot of the fear has to do with media propaganda, and also narrow minded people who believe that dark or different is evil.

When I used to attend a dear little catholic school, I was bullied mercilessly and one of the weakest excuses they used was that my hair being jet black and having dark eyes made me a witch and a servant of satan. Funny though that anything dark and threatening was spearheaded by the followers of the dark mass in the Vatican! I believe it is simply an excuse to start off some nonsense persecution by a bunch of bored out of their skull, pubic hair counting morons.

I don't see what hair and eye color has anything to do with witchery and sorcery. NOTHING TO DO WITH IT.... sorry, my other side wanted to say something. Anyways, the truth is is that there isn't a reason for persecution in our obviously perfect United States... flawed as heck if you ask me.
I am a major sorcerer type, I believe that magik has everything yet nothing to do with this world. Physical appearance has nothing to do with it though. My hair is brown, and my eyes are hazel green and brown.

It all comes down to the color BLACK and what the media and the entertainment industry has done to make that color seen BAD or EVIL.
The bad guy always wears black, rides a black horse and wears a black hat. Witches/Wizards always wear a black robe and practices in the black of night. Most Religions the minister wears a black robe. Do you see where I am going with this.....

A lot of the anti-goth sentiment stemmed from the columbine shooting. the media falsely labeled the shooters as Gothic because of their black clothes and their association with a student group called the 'trench coat mafia' (which was also NOT Gothic)...
Ever notice that all the bad Gothic stereotypes have come from non-goths imitating us? This is the main reason why I hold negative feelings for "posers" (not because they imitate us, but because they give us a bad name)
Those are my feelings.
