Are leprechauns an off shot of the Elven family or from the Fae family?

They fall under the Fairy family tree, like elves they are their own sub-specieis of fey. I am reading a book, called the The Secret Commonwealth: Of Elves, Fauns, and Fairies, its the companion to the Secret lives of fairies and elves, by Robert Kirk. Very interesting. Robert Kirk was a pastor in 17thc Scotland I believe, who wrote in his own private journals the dealings he and his parishioners had with elves and fairies. It's slow going due to time constraints but as I get through it, I'll post on it. I know he categorizes certain fey types.

IMO Leprechauns and Clurichauns are types of faeries, in the "little people" category. Elves are something else entirely, something taller and more regal (for starters). The application of the term "elf" to Little Peoples is inaccurate, I think.
