Much of the lore has come from the obvious places like Ireland, England, and Scotland; however there are tales of fae from all over the world. I have several books that deal with this. I will dig them out and post the references.

On a recent posting, before I disappeared briefly, I mentioned that Cicely Mary Barker's collection of Flower Fairies could be found on the Amazon US and UK site.
And another thing too worth mentioning, the Celts held strong beliefs in the existence of fairies. The British belief in these spirits is rather muted, they regard them more as mythical.

Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to this board with references! Have had a hectic semester.
I have several good fairy/fae sources. However, there is one that I have misplaced and I will try to remember the name.
McCoy, Edain (2002). A Witches Guide to Faery Folk. Llewellyn Publications; St. Paul, MN.
Virtue, Doreen (2001). Healing with the Fairies. Hay House Inc. (this book was the first source that made me start looking into Otherkin. There was a section on incarnated angels and faeries and this was the first time I had actually considered the concept although I had always hoped it was true).
Walker, John. The Fairy Faith. DVD by Wellspring Media, John Walker Productions.
I have 2 other books, one on Faery Wicca and another on Faeries that takes a different approach to what faeries are than say Edain McCoy. I will try to find that reference ASAP.
