One's senses becomes honed. Perception of life as a human, takes on a different meaning. Putting this into words isn't very easy, it is an experiencial thing.

As sigrid said. You may also feel a little more restless. Just don't expect much. Your not suddenly going to start acting different when you begin to awaken

Nothing really changes...you aren't really waking anything up, after all--you're just becoming aware of something that was already there. At least, I've been given to understand that is what people mean when they talk about a therian/otherkin "awakening". It's not like a psi or vamp awakening, where latent abilities become active. Like a lot of therians, I can't point to an awakening for myself, because I was aware of my therianthropy in early childhood...I simply don't remember when I identified it specifically.

What sort of things can one expect when awakeing as a Therian? Mairi Strenghts and Weaknesses mentally seen, methods of thinking that change. And probably a disdain for how corrupt humanity is.... ah

Hm, it takes a while, but I think MOST therians eventually get over the total disdain for humanity phase. It requires a lot of deep thought, and honesty. We are human too, and everything we say about "them" applies to us as well. We might think a bit differently, but just HOW differently do we really act, the majority of the time?
The main thing to get past, though, is the idea that whether you consider yourself human or not, that humans are somehow DIFFERENT from other animals. They really aren't. Expecting them to BE different...to behave differently, to be better, to be worse: That's the delusion in this. Humans are going to be the animal they are. They have instincts, they follow them. They have culture, because like many other species, that's the way they're wired. They are destructive because they're self-centered, just like every other species out there. They don't curb their behavior to prepare for the future, they're not disciplined--like every other species out there.
If you stop looking at them as a demonic scourge or a fallen angel race, then you can see them as a typical animal--one that has things about it that you CAN actually admire.
But I think that young therians...whether that's therian children, or those who just realized their therianthropy, or whatever--have to go through that stage where they just reject humanity, even despise humanity, for all of its flaws. They were given an unrealistic picture of humans, and when humans don't live up to it...they get angry. It takes years and years to come around and see the real picture, and be able to get some sense of admiration for what is, after all, a fairly interesting species. If rats were doing what humans are doing, would you feel the same way about them? Probably not, because you would consider them to be innocent of ill intent, and simply doing what they're designed by nature to do..... That's what humans are REALLY all about.
I would go so far as to say that the disillusionment-with/rejection of humanity could be considered a phase of therianthropic 'awakening'.

Has anyone else ever felt depressed in the time directly following their awakening?

I consider myself to be therian and with my awakening I felt both relief and fear. I finally had figured out that I wasn't going crazy hence the relief and then fear of what's to come. Does what I do factor into what I am? What if I'm wrong? Am I still crazy? things like that. I never felt depression b/c of my awakening, but perhaps I feel depressed b/c I don't have others like me in close proximity? I'm not alone by any means since I have a boyfriend thankfully who I was able to convey my feelings as to what I am (dragon), yet I don't know of any other dragons near where I am. My boyfriend is possibly going thru an awakening himself so I will be there for him as he has been for me. I'll help him thru the process but also will let him make the conclusions as I can't tell him what he is.
Be well everyone!
*hugs*
