What items do you consider essential when setting up a permanent altar? What do you always make sure to bring along for your traveling one (if you use a traveling altar at all, I know some don't)?

I don't own a traveling altar but eventually would love to find one. I have a few stones that I find special to me. A flat round rosey stone that I think is quartz (could be wrong), I have a tiger's eyes stone and hematite (sp?) placed around a crystal ball and stand, my dragon inscence burner, and a natural coral mortar & pestle as well as a few votive candles on my altar.
I also have a decorative knife placed on the altar but it's far too large I think so I need to find me an athame that will work better.

Currently, my altar, if you can even call it that, is on my window sill. It has this large chunk and small chunk of quartz. (The big, surprisingly, came with the Teen Witch kit by SRW. I got it to freak out my dad when I was younger, and this is the only part that hasn't dissapeared on me.) A vial of rose amber oil. A scattering of tea lights, and random different things that change as I change my mind. The quartz goes with me everywhere, though. It was one of the first things packed for my move, so I wouldn't forget it. In the duffel I thought I was going to bring wit me, but ended up leaving behind, holds the rest of my regular things: A chinese writing rock, a few interesting pendants, and some sparkly rocks that caught my eye one day.
